Eleanor Burt Torpey, 99, of 6 North Main Street, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at the home of her grandson, Jason Torpey, where she had been lovingly cared for by Jason and her great-grandchildren, Jacob and Alivia, for several months.
Born October 13, 1925, she was the eldest daughter of Ernest and Marian (DeWitt) Burt. She attended a one-room schoolhouse through 7th grade and graduated from Hinsdale Central School in 1942.
Following World War II, she married Lawrence Torpey, who predeceased her in 1978. Eleanor worked for G.L.F., Cuba National Bank, and later cared for her great-grandchildren. A devoted member of the First Baptist Church in Cuba, Eleanor’s greatest joy was her family.
She is survived by her daughter, Carol Lisi; her sister, Karen Burt; four grandchildren: Christine (Rob) Popolizio, Pete (Beth) Lisi, Jason (Briar) Torpey, and Andy Swift; ten great-grandchildren: Jackson Lisi, Joey Zajicek, Alivia (Josh Gilbert), Jacob, Jared, and Jason Jr. Torpey, Brooke, Chris, and Avah Auman, and Austin Lewis; two great-great-grandchildren, Harper and Carter Gilbert; a son-in-law, Rich Swift; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by three daughters, Nancy Swift, Linda Thornton, and Judy Torpey; a granddaughter, Lisa Zajicek; two sisters, Arlene Wierzbowski and Ruth Rasmusson; and a brother, Ernest Burt Jr.
Friends will be received at the Mark F. Rinker Funeral Home & Memorial Service, 9 Bull St., Cuba, on Saturday (October 11, 2025) from 1 to 2 p.m., with a funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. Pastor Claudia Little will officiate. Burial will be in Cuba Cemetery.
