World War II Veteran
Samuel H. Stives, Jr., 90, of 22 Factory Street, Friendship, passed away Sunday, January 10, 2016 shortly after arrival at Jones Memorial Hospital, Wellsville.

Born on June 4, 1925, in Bolivar, New York he was a son of Samuel H. and Susie Fancher Stives Sr. On September 27, 1946, in Olean he married the former Betty June Chase who predeceased him.

Sam served in the United States Navy during World War II on a merchant marine ship from September 24, 1943 until March 29, 1946.

He had worked in the Bradley Oil Fields, the Olean Tile Plant and then went to work as a laborer for Friendship Dairies retiring after 20 years.

Sam was a former member of the Friendship Fire Department and a member of the Friendship American Legion Post 1168 and the Scio Senior Citizens. He loved to be with his family, enjoyed stock car racing, hunting, fishing, dancing and socializing with his friends.

Surviving are two sons, Howard (Rita) Stives of Wellsville, and Terry (Connie) Stives of Friendship; a son-in-law, Lee Winchell of Friendship; seven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren; a sister, Mary Pangburn of Big Spring, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a daughter Nancy Winchell, his brothers Fred, Earl, Kenneth, and Robert Stives, and sisters Pauline Johnson and Doris Miller.

Friends will be received at the Mark F. Rinker Funeral Home & Memorial Service, Inc., 9 Bull Street, Cuba, on Thursday, January 14, 2016 from 2-4 & 7-9 P.M. where funeral services will be held on Friday, January 15, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. The Rev. Marc Chamberlain, pastor of Genesis Bible Church will officiate.

Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Friendship, New York.
