Loving Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather
Richard C. Botens, 91, of 8574 Route 305, Black Creek, peacefully went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, October 25, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family. On February 19, 1946, in Black Creek he married the former Margaret I. Shaffer, his wife of nearly 65 years who predeceased him on January 1, 2011.

Mr. Botens was a graduate of Cuba Central School Class of 1941. He then served in the United States Army from 1942-1946, serving his time in the Pacific Theater. For his service he received the Philippines Liberation Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon including three bronze service stars, and the Good Conduct Medal.

He worked for over 20 years at Cuba Cheese and then owned and operated the Botens General Store in Black Creek for another 20 plus years. While owning the store he was also a distinguished bus driver for Cuba Central School until his retirement.

He was a longtime member of the Black Creek Baptist Church where he served in various capacities including deacon and trustee. He was a member of the Cuba American Legion Post 655, the Cuba VFW Post 2721, and the Shawn M. Clemens Memorial Am Vets Post 1 of Cuba.

Besides his love for the Lord, he enjoyed teaching Sunday school, and working in his garden.

Surviving are his four sons, Thomas R. Botens of Jamestown, Steven R. (Jean) Botens of Black Creek, Timothy J. (Mary) Botens of Black Creek, and Andy Botens of Black Creek; 12 grandchildren; 15 great grand children; a sister, Francis Bunk of North Carolina; and several nieces and Nnphews.

In addition to his parents and wife he was predeceased by a grandson Thomas Sterling Botens; a great grand daughter Josalyn M. Sheets; a brother James Botens; two sisters Margaret Oakes and Joan Bunk; and a daughter-in-law Yvonne M. Botens.

The family will receive friends at the Mark F. Rinker Funeral Home & Memorial Service, Inc., 9 Bull Street, Cuba, on Tuesday, October 27, 2015 from 2-4 & 7-9 P.M. where funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. The Rev. John Asquith, pastor of the Black Creek Baptist Church will officiate.

Burial will be in Cuba Cemetery, Cuba, New York.
