Laurence Charles Older Jr.

Laurence Charles Older Jr. passed away peacefully at the Olean General Hospital in Olean, NY, on Thursday, December 28. Laurence was born on October 23, 1943, at the Cuba Memorial Hospital in Cuba, NY, to Anne Nell Older (Reese) and Dr. Laurence Charles Older. He graduated from Cuba Central High School in 1961, then obtained a B.A. degree in History from the University of Rochester in 1965. While at the U of R, he was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He then obtained his J.D. degree from Vanderbilt University School of Law in 1968.

Laurence spent much of his life in Cuba, both at the family residence in town and at the family cottage on Cuba Lake. He was a passionate reader of history, had a keen interest in genealogy and loved researching and collecting antiques. He was an avid gardener, kept fit walking and working out, and was an active member of a wine club. In his younger years, Laurence enjoyed sailing the family’s Lightning sailboat and motorboating on Cuba Lake. Laurence also loved giving thoughtful gifts at Christmas and for birthdays, particularly to his nieces and nephews. He happily spent time with them in their younger years, talking and playing indoor and outdoor games, leaving behind appreciated childhood memories. Laurence was also a caring son, particularly in the latter years of his father’s life, assisting his mother as Alzheimer’s disease created challenges to his father’s care.

Laurence was preceded in death by his father, Laurence, mother, Nell, and brother-in-law Abbott, and is survived by his sister, Ellen, two brothers, Thomas (Anne) and Richard (Helen), five nieces and three nephews. He was loved and will be missed.

Burial will be in Cuba Cemetery, next to his parents.
