Larry O. Layman

Larry O. Layman, 71, of Cuba, New York passed away Monday, May 14, 2018 at Olean General Hospital after a brief illness.

Born on April 5, 1947, in Cuba, he the son of Leslie and Jennie Learn Layman. On April 12, 1969 at the Four Square Gospel Church of Olean he married the former Kathleen M. Champlin who survives.

He was a graduate of Hinsdale Central School Class of 1966. He then entered the United State Marine Corp serving from October 31, 1966 until September 1, 1969. He had been a radio operator and received the National Defense Service Medal, Rifle Expert Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Parachutist Insignia, and Letter of Appreciation for his service.

Larry then returned to Olean where he worked six years for ACME Electric Corp in Allegany before becoming a member of the Olean City Fire Department retiring after 20 years of service. He then worked part time for 14 years and one-year full time as a custodian for the Olean City School District.

His hobbies included bird watching, reloading pistol shells, hunting, fishing, watching boxing, tractors, motorcycles, scuba diving, downhill skiing, 4-wheeling, and plowing the fields. He also enjoyed body building, spending time with family and being a Volunteer Educator for Bee Keeping and Rocket Launching at East View Elementary School in Olean.

He was a road captain for the Twin Tiers Christian Motorcycle group.

In addition to his wife he is survived by a son, Darik Layman of Erie, PA; a daughter, Jennifer (John) Hendrickson of Cuba; and his grandchildren, Brandin, Alexis, Samantha (Charles), and Sierra.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral Services will be privately held at the convenience of the family.

Burial will be in Abbotts Cemetery, Ischua, New York.
