Hazel E. Spanneut
Loving Mother, Grandmother, Great-grandmother
Hazel E. Spanneut, 97, of 9714 West Cuba Rd, Cuba, passed away Friday, December 5, 2014 at Cuba Memorial Hospital's Palliative Care Program.

Born on June 7, 1917, at the home of her grandparents in Cuba, New York she was a daughter of Henry L. and Clara M. Rogers Green. On September 16, 1938, in Cuba she married George R. Spanneut, Jr., who predeceased her on September 23, 1995.

She attended first and second grade at the First Baptist Church, later elementary grades at the Green Street School, and high school on Medbury Street graduating in 1935 with ceremonies being held at the Palmer Opera House.

Hazel worked as a waitress at various restaurants in Cuba, was a housekeeper for several families in Cuba and later worked for Acme Electric, but most of all she enjoyed being a homemaker wife and mother to her family. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Both Hazel and her husband were active members of the First Baptist Church for over 50 years, the Cuba Historical Society, and an 80 plus year member of Cuba Grange 799. She was also active in other groups.

She enjoyed parades, attending county fairs, horse pulls, the Rushford Labor Day Celebration.

Surviving are her children, Nancy Lennon of Olean, Gene (Bernice) Spanneut of Penn Yan, and Mary (William) Swift of Cuba; her grandsons, George Lennon, Justin Spanneut, and Jerome Swift; her granddaughters, Rochelle Merchant, Carrie Spanneut, and Megan Swift; several great grandchildren; a brother, Albert (Anna) Green of Cuba; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents and husband she was predeceased by a brother Harold M. Green in 1943; and a granddaughter Dr. Valerie Steele on October 28, 2008.

Friends will be received at the First Baptist Church, 17 South Street, Cuba, on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 from 10:00 A.M. until Noon at which time funeral services will be held. The Rev. Larry A. Poelma, will officiate.

Burial will be in Cuba Cemetery, Cuba, New York.

The family requests memorials in Hazel's name be made to the First Baptist Church or the Cuba Historical Society.
