Douglas W. Rettig Jr.

Douglas W. Rettig Jr., 55 of Arkport, NY, passed away on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at the Bath, NY VA Medical Center surrounded by his family after a brief illness with brain and lung cancer.

Born in Olean, NY on June 7, 1966, he was the son of Douglas W. Rettig Sr. and Karen Brooks (Field) who survive.

As a boy, Doug spent many years delivering newspapers as well as serving as an altar boy at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church in Cuba, NY. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America, Cuba Little League baseball, and enjoyed dirt bike racing. He was an avid history enthusiast and an active member of Cuba Central Schools’ Yorker Club. While in high school, Doug additionally participated in the schools’ cross-country athletic team as well as varsity basketball; their team winning the State Championship in 1984. Among other sport interests, Doug still looked forward to Sunday NASCAR races as one of his favorite pastimes; a long-time Rusty Wallace fan.

A 1984 graduate of Cuba High School, Doug attended both Cortland University and Alfred State College. In 1991, he enlisted in the United States Army however; following a serious injury, he received an honorable discharge in 1993. Following his discharge, Doug worked for various construction companies across New York State. During his free time, he enjoyed writing; and in 2005, published a history book entitled “Critics At War” under the pen name of R. Stone; a compilation of his love of history.

Doug is survived by his mother, Karen Brooks-Field and step-father Dana Field of Zephyrhills, FL; his father Douglas W. Rettig Sr. and step-mother Cindy Kottwitz Rettig of Cuba, NY; his sister Susan (Brian) Cross of Olean, NY; three nephews; Brendan Cross of Buffalo, NY, Logan Cross and Tyler Cross of Olean, NY; his maternal Aunt and Godmother Sharon (James) Taylor of Prattsburg, NY; several cousins and many extended family members. He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Melvin and Grace Vecchio Brooks and paternal grandparents, William and Nancy Quattrone Rettig; both formerly of Salamanca, NY.

Due to the on-going COVID 19 pandemic; services have been scheduled for January 15, 2022 at the Mark Rinker Funeral Home, 9 Bull Street in Cuba, NY from 11am – 1pm; with a funeral service beginning at 1pm. The Rev. Dr. Anthony Evans, will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family at a later date.

A Celebration of Life Service for Douglas W.
