Dorothy M. Root

Dorothy M. Root of 25 South Shore Rd., Cuba, passed away Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at Cuba Memorial Hospital's Palliative Care Program after an extended illness.

Born on March 2, 1926, in Austin, PA she was a daughter of William and Jessie Cubbidge Van Curen. On April 23, 1948, in Olean, New York she marred Harold W. Root who predeceased her on February 24, 1981.

Dorothy graduated from eighth grade at School Four in East Olean in 1939 and then graduated from Olean High School in 1943. In 1989, Dorothy and her classmates started Class reunions for School Four and looked forward to hosting a yearly celebration for many years.

She owned and operated Weston's Crafts Supplies for many years retiring when she sold the store in 1982.

When her children were young she enjoyed being a Den mother for Cub Scouts. She also looked forward to the four seasons of living on Cuba Lake and enjoyed entertaining at her home. She liked doing crafts but most of all spending time with her grandchildren.

Surviving are her son, Richard "Rick" (Carolyn) Root of Cuba; her daughter, Alice "Ginger" (Thomas) Moser of Olean; her grandchildren, Kelly (Christopher) Filkins, Timothy (Amanda Burrows) Root, and Mark Moser; her great grandchildren, Nathan, Trey, Caleb, Kallie, Gabriel, and Oliver; and several nieces and nephews including a special niece, especially in her later years Kathleen (Al) Abdo of Rushford Lake.

In addition to her parents and husband she was predeceased by a brother Arthur Van Curen and a sister Alice Van Curen.

Friends will be received at the Mark F. Rinker Funeral Home & Memorial Service, Inc., 9 Bull Street, Cuba, on Friday, January 23, 2015 from 5-8 P.M. where funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. The Rev. Larry A. Poelma, pastor of the First Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be alongside her husband in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Portville, New York.
