Loving Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather
Donald J. "Poppy" Totten, Sr., 91, of 6671 Mount Monroe Road, Town of New Hudson, passed away Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at Cuba Memorial Hospital's Skilled Nursing Facility after a lengthy illness.

Born on August 7, 1921, in Cuba, NY he was a son of David and Matilda "Tillie" Swift Totten. On July 2, 1949, in Cuba New York he married the former Jeanne B. Beyer who predeceased him in October 3, 1986.

Mr. Totten was a graduate of Cuba Central School Class of 1940 and Alfred Ag. Tech.

Don was a dairy farmer his entire life devoting his time to the Totten Shire Farm up until the past several years. During the Cold War he was a member of the Civil Defense. He was a former Justice of the Peace, member of the grievance board, assessor, and census taker for the Town of New Hudson. For many years he enjoyed writing The Mount Monroe Column in the Cuba Patriot which helped depict his view of life from the top of Mount Monroe often telling what the weather was like and what his neighbors and himself had been up to on a weekly basis.

He was an avid hunter for many years, he enjoyed story telling, and spending as much time as he could with family and friends. His other special interests included honey bees, producing maple syrup, tractors, baseball and farming.

He was a longtime supporter and 60 plus year member of the Allegany County Cooperative Extension, the Cuba Road and Gun Club, the National Rifle Association, the Milk Producers Association, and had been a member of the Dairyman's League since 1946.

Surviving are two sons, Mark Totten of California, and Donald (Karen) Totten, Jr. of Rochester; four daughters, Kathy (Kelsie Marea) Okay of Oregon, Joan (Robert) Amundson of South Carolina, Deborah (Mark) Haynes of Mexico, and Denise (Loren) Luzier of New Hudson; 13 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife he was predeceased by a brother Robert Totten; and sisters Mary Anne Conklin Warren and Betty Newton.

Friends will be received at the Mark F. Rinker Funeral Home and Memorial Service, Inc., 9 Bull Street, Cuba on Thursday, March 21, 2013 from 2-4 & 7-9 P.M. where funeral services will be held on Friday, March 22, 2013 at 1:00 P.M. The Rev. Larry A. Poelma, pastor the First Baptist Church of Cuba, will officiate.
